Hi {{first_name}},

If you’re reading this newsletter, you’re aware of how important balance is in life.

Not just among work and the rest of your life, but factoring in balance in all parts of life - mind, body, emotions and soul.

I didn’t realize how bogged down I had become. I had been carrying so many things with me - emotions, deadlines, responsibilities, many not my own!

My intuition told me to take this big leap of faith to clear my energy.

So, I listened.

And put my phone away for 36 hours.

Below is my video summary of what happened.

If the thought of being away from our phone makes you sweat… please, read on.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with information, feeling like you can’t keep up and always “on”, please, read on.

After climbing mountains and being available to many people in my life for months at a pace that is seriously not meant for humans…I decided to take a break from it all.

Big demands from clients, outreach every week to find new leads, teaching many private students and groups multiple times per week - this is a new level and a new pace that I needed to adjust to.

Not to mention the fun stuff! Outings with friends, dinners at home, pool parties, wine tasting, friends visiting- all great things!

Yet, each requires energy to sustain.

We decide every day what to do with our time. Each moment is a choice on how to spend it.

Will this task support me? Will it support others? Is it absolutely necessary?

How available do I need to be? Or better yet, how does my energy shift when I am available at certain levels.

These were the questions running through my mind after I was divinely guided to put my phone away for the weekend. The guides didn’t specify a number; totally okay with me. This was a practice of following divine guidance and also using all of my intelligence to discern my energy levels. I recognized that I was overloaded and need to take a break. Further, I was meant to recognize when I was ready to go back to and embrace ordinary reality.

Just as I made that decision, my friend told me about AI’s affects on our brain. AI can be super beneficial as a research partner, assistant, etc. The dark side of AI can be an over reliance on this tool to provide answers; totally missing critical thinking that a human brain can provide. This can create an over reliance on your smartphone and the myriad of tools it provides.

Some interesting studies, sometimes referenced as "Your Brain on ChatGPT" have shown:

  • Participants who exclusively used AI to write essays showed "weaker brain connectivity" and "lower memory retention"

  • EEG measurements allegedly showed brain connectivity "systematically scaled down with the amount of external support"

  • A Microsoft study projection claims 62% of participants reported engaging in less critical thinking when using AI, particularly for routine tasks

Also found in the CHATGPT study:

“generally, the more time users spend talking to ChatGPT, the lonelier they feel.”

Yikes!

I thought chatbots were meant to make you feel connected!?

Back to my desire to to disconnect.

I took this leap not fully understanding why i needed it, but knowing deep down that I would be learning and feeling something at the end.

Phone off. Didn’t tell anyone. Went about my Friday night, driving around wtih out my GPS. Drove to pilates, had a massage. Didn’t even listen to music as I drove around.

Quiet. Space, breathing room.

I could hear my body better. Hunger signals, sleepiness.

I took many naps.

Farmers market, ran into a friends (the one that told me that AI stuff) and we shared about our lives at that moment. He glanced at his phone many times during our convo.

I had a reaction to go look for mine…it wasn’t in my purse as it would normally be! Redirect to something else- the person in front of me.

A gentle hatha yoga class. Heard the sounds that all the humans make.

This is what I’ve learned about myself:

-My own over reliance on my phone - I check it every few minutes because I have allowed myself to be available and I want to be deemed responsible by those around me.

-Life is moving super fast and information moves even faster.

-I have control of what I allow in.

-I don’t need to be around my phone as much as I am. Im taking more breaks!

Something to Try

  1. Start slow, spend 4 hours, then 12 hours, then maybe even 24 or more hours away from your phone.

    1. Notice what happens to your energy and your mind and your mood.

    2. Use this time away from your phone to understand your boundaries - how much is too much?

    3. Note this and create separation from your devices throughout your day.

I’d love to hear from you.

Are these insights helpful?

Which tools have you used?

What would you like to share with others?

Best wishes & many blessings,

Lisa

Turns out the last newsletter (Riding the Waves) really resonated with many of you. I received lots of emails, messages and replies about the message. Sharing just a few that were short and sweet but may echo your sentiment.

I loved and needed this message! What an incredible 2 months I have had…struggled, cried a lot, worried a lot, DID A LOT, incorporated more faith in my life and so so much more.  I really enjoyed just taking the time to write out all that I did…wow! I also love the idea of making sure to celebrate/reward yourself.

Thanks Lisa; your insights come at an appropriate time. I'm in the process of reviving/growing my business. It's working but I need to cultivate resilience and patience.
