Riding the Waves

They’ve been big lately!

Hey there, beautiful souls!

Life has a way of throwing us into the most incredible waves, doesn't it? The kind that make you feel like you're being swept away, where everything feels out of control, and you're left with no choice but to surrender to the power of it all. These waves are life-defining, and they often come with a move that seems to fall into place at the last minute, like signing a lease as you're driving down to your new home.

So, what's the best thing to do when you're caught in these waves? Trust. Have faith. Remember that you've been here before and you know what to do. Take care of yourself, because in the end, you are your own best support.

For me, this looks like recommitting to my physical practices—walking, yoga, pilates, dance, and weights. But nothing too intense that adds more stress. I'm adding one more walk each week and throwing in a dance class for fun. I've also started teaching yoga multiple times a week, which counts as self-care too!

The waves have looked like this for me: moving my home in just two weeks, testing and buying a new car, and navigating extended family dynamics after my grandmother's passing. It's been a lot, but I've found that I have the bandwidth and capacity to handle it all. And equally important is knowing when to stop. It's easy to stay up late, justifying a long work day that turns into night, or watching one more episode and sacrificing precious sleep. But saying no is the healthiest way to stay in your high frequency and trust.

Through all of this, my heart has opened and grown. I mourn the old parts of me, the familiarity of that past state. I miss comfort, I miss sameness, and I miss coasting through these parts of life. Yet, the swell shows up, ready or not. I choose to challenge myself and step up to the plate. When part of me wants to stay in complacency, I remind myself, "What will you want to feel when you look back at these moments in time? Will I be proud of how I showed up?"

A beautiful Native American saying goes like this: "When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice." I choose to rejoice in my choices and in my life. And so, that takes work.

These past 6 months have tested my resolve and readiness. Are all of my practices serving me to step up to this giant wave? Will my years of yoga, deep breathing, shamanic healing, coaching, doula work, marketing, being a parent, daughter, auntie, sister, friend, and cousin have prepared me enough? Turns out, I've been ready all along.

My capacity has expanded, showing me my own strength and capabilities. The fear does show up, but my past is the key to my future. My emotional weight-lifting has provided the structure for these new challenges. A new level of strength has been activated.

Something to Try

  1. Make a list of everything you’ve accomplished this month. Could be big or small: something like taking a walk or finishing that work project on time. Challenge yourself to remember all of the things you’ve done. If you’re an elite being, you’ve done a lot. And you’ve likely moved from one thing to another, almost seamlessly, but also without recognizing or celebrating these wins.

  2. Plan a celebration for yourself.  A dinner at a nice restaurant, going out with friends, maybe some new clothing or that special piece of jewelry. When I obtain a new client, I purchase a nice piece of jewelry. Keeps me motivated! I know you’ve accomplished some big goals this month, now it’s time to honor you!

Why Does This Work?

Celebrations activate a cool part of our brain- the reward center. Each time you celebrate or honor a win- and then give yourself a reward (could be tangible or would be in words or gestures) your brain wants to receive more of that by releasing neurotransmitters- serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin, and dopamine!

If you’ve trained a dog or raised a baby, you know this well. Adults respond in the same way - we have the brain of a mammal 😀!

So, beautiful souls, remember to trust the process, take care of yourselves, and celebrate every win, no matter how small. You are capable of riding these waves and coming out stronger on the other side. Keep shining bright!

Paddling next to you,

Lisa
