There is a rhythm to nature that we often outpace in our race to build our businesses. Last week, I chose to find it again. I retreated to a yurt for a mid-week escape—no cell service, no emails, no digital noise. Just trees, a campfire, my partner, my dog, and the simple, grounding act of picking wild blackberries.

For 36 hours, I didn't just turn off my phone; I turned off the "always-on" mentality.

We often mistake "slow" for "unproductive," but what I found was the exact opposite. By tuning out the external static, I was able to tune back into my internal rhythm. I went to bed at 8:00 pm, pleasantly worn out by the sun and physical movement, and woke up the next morning clearer than I have been in months.

Returning to the rhythm of The Hive on Monday, I didn't just feel "rested"—I felt aligned. My capacity to process, create, and analyze was operating at a higher frequency. It was a powerful reminder that we are the lifeblood of our own work. When the Queen Bee is exhausted, the hive cannot thrive. We are more than our output, and when we neglect our need for stillness, the work—and our well-being—inevitably suffers.

The Science Behind Taking a Break

The brain relies on a limited pool of mental resources for self-control, decision-making, and focused attention (often tied to executive functions in the prefrontal cortex).

  • The Science: Continued mental effort leads to what psychologists traditionally call "ego depletion" or cognitive fatigue. As energy stores drain, your ability to resist distractions, solve complex problems, and make sound decisions plummets.

  • The Break Effect: A well-known study on judges making parole decisions (Danziger et al., 2011) demonstrated that judges were significantly more likely to grant parole at the beginning of the day or immediately after a food break. As the session wore on, their cognitive fatigue led them to default to the easiest, lowest-risk decision (denying parole). Taking a break literally replenishes the executive stamina required for high-level analytical work.

The Invitation

As you move forward into your week, I invite you to pause and ask: Where do I need to pause to recharge myself?

Because when your mind, body, and spirit are in alignment, you don’t just show up for life—you shine through it. You are meant for more than just the daily grind. Take the break, clear the noise, and reclaim your power. Slowing down is not an escape; it is a strategic necessity for sustainable growth. It is a non-negotiable investment in your most valuable asset: yourself.
