Why Healing Begins With You (And Why You've Been Getting It Wrong)
We've all heard the saying "you can't pour from an empty cup," yet most of us continue to give until we're running on fumes. After my divorce, sudden parenthood, and navigating the pandemic while running a business, I finally felt the feeling of not being able to give anymore- there wasn't anything left!
It wasn't until I realized that healing must begin with ME that my transformation began. Here's why this simple truth changes everything.
The Myth of Self-Sacrifice
Our culture glorifies self-sacrifice, especially for women. We're taught that putting ourselves last is virtuous, noble, even necessary. But what if this belief is actually keeping you stuck? In my work as a shamanic healer and life coach, I've seen countless clients who've built their identities around being "the giver" only to find themselves empty, resentful, and disconnected from their true selves.
Your Body's Secret Language
Your emotional body speaks to you by restricting movement in your physical body. She cries out when she needs help by slowing you down so that you need to rest, release, and address any emotions that have not been addressed. Before my awakening, I slouched constantly, hid my figure in shapeless clothes, and avoided eye contact - all physical manifestations of my inner turmoil.
The Shift That Changed Everything
The moment I understood that healing begins with me - not my circumstances, not other people - everything changed. I stopped waiting for permission to prioritize myself. I created daily "Me Moments" (breathwork, meditation, journaling) that became my anchor. I stopped apologizing for needing space. And most importantly, I stopped believing that self-care was selfish.

Me Moment: The 5.5 Breath
Take a full yogic breath - inhaling first into your belly, then ribs, then chest. Exhale in reverse order. Aim for 5.5 breaths per minute (about 5.5 seconds inhale, 5.5 seconds exhale). Do this for just 3 minutes and notice how your body, mind, and emotions shift. This simple practice created coherence among my brain, heart, blood circulation, and nervous system when nothing else could.

Healing begins with you because you're the only person who will be with you for your entire life. You deserve to be your own priority. When we make the conscious choice to move into balance, we take ownership of ourselves and lead by example. We show future generations how to navigate this tumultuous world in a healthy way. The wisdom we seek is found within. It all begins with you.
