Community

Community can be the healing medicine.

I am an introvert. My favorite times are with myself, alone, by the ocean with my journal.

Having “alone-time” at times is healthy, and when intentional, can help you to get clarity and focus in your life.

However, I am also a human - a creature meant for connection.

All of my favorite learning happens in groups - school, yoga teacher trainings, shaman school, even my pilates classes and the yoga classes that I teach weekly.

The teach/learn dynamic is special and perfect for learning lessons in a gentler way.

Setting the intention to grow and share and learn together which can make the process exponentially more valuable.

After pandemic years, and the collective soul loss we experienced, I notice how when I feel a certain way…

Lonely, tired, heavy. I am carrying too much.

Though the pandemic and lock down is over, we still have the collective memory of being distanced from our fellow humans, something that is not natural for our species. As humans, we need to connect with one another, ideally in-person.

Derek Thompson of The Atlantic echoed the same conclusion in his recent article, "The Anti-Social Century," citing data that Americans spent even more time alone in 2023 than they did in 2021, and young people now spend much less time hanging out in-person, even celebrating canceled plans on social media.

Loneliness is highly correlated with anxiety or depressive symptoms as well as a low sense of meaning or purpose. To fully integrate our learnings, lessons, and healings, sharing and connecting is the key.

Or that desire to connect, share and laugh, to experience joy.

A phone call sometimes can fill this need. Those calls with a like-minded friend who is experiencing parallel life moments.

We share, we laugh at humanity and the remember that its an interesting journey.

In real life, has become the most supreme and luxurious form of connection.

Touch, emotion, sounds; you know exactly what I mean.

Something to Try

Sharing a Me Moment that I write about in my book It All Begins With You.

For this Me Moment, we are going to focus on COMMUNITY.

You can do this in many ways. The key is to find what is comfortable and resonates for you.

A few ideas here:

  • Call your best friend to share what you’ve learned.

  • Start a group in your community sharing what you love to do – yoga, sewing, reading, movies, etc.

  • Start a group online.

  • Share something you’ve learned on a social media platform.

  • Connect with people in your local yoga studio, cafe, gym, healing center, or other gathering place.

  • Go to an event in person - see below!

A Great in real life event!

Join my event in Oakland on February 28!
